Job Role /

Art director and digital and multimedia specialist. My role at WVPB as the head of design was to bring creative ideas from across the company to life. From updating the WVPB brand and implementing new design standards, to working with the video production team on documentaries, journalists on reports, and internal projects that required ground-up branding I worked with individuals and groups to create materials that would help share.

Goals /

My goal at WVPB was to help bring a single visual voice to an already well-established company. From day it was my goal to provide the creative skills necessary to help everyone create that highest quality project possible. From working with the heads of departments on large-scale updates to individuals on smaller personal projects, my goal was to always provide digital assets that could be used to help share the stories of West Virginia. After 5 years a number of these projects and brand assets can still be seen in use.

Challenges /

Many of the challenges that arose while working at WVPB were centered around bringing a long-established brand into the modern era of web based design. This included a visual brand update that was implemented company-wide across all mediums, including the logo and color update, but also setting standards for photography, print, digital and web design, logo creation, and all visuals moving forward.

I was met with several points of friction while updating the brand, these are some of the notable systems put into place to help elevate areas of strain.

  • Updating the internal media server, where anyone company-wide could access important digital assets they would need for their projects.

  • Setting new standards for all digital media produced internally or provided by sponsors, creating a more refined and consistent look company-wide. These design standards allowed work to be completed more quickly, helping to reduce the number of alterations submitted on a given project.

  • Creating a space where creativity could be challenged, allowing for more individual projects to get the complete creative support they deserved, including internal branding, custom web pages, and unique marketing materials.

  • Offering special design support on grant-funded projects allowing for more in-depth and enriching projects to take place, like stand-alone website design, app design and development, outreach programs including more hands-on materials for kids.
